Experience

I have been tutoring high school math regularly, since August when I began working with one of my former teachers. I'm a tutor because I spend a lot of time working on math anyway, I'm good at explaining math to others, and because I enjoy it.

Hobbies

Instead of prattling on about my interests, here are some of the reasons why you should hire me. As a tutor, I am extremely focused on making sessions optimally effective and beneficial. -I think holistically about student performance, and the issues that effect it. So, if I discern that a student is having issues with organization, study habits, or whatever, then I would try to address those problems. -I focus on maximizing the ground that we cover. Once a concept has been explained and the student shows that they are able to solve the related problems, we move on. I try not to let too much time go towards the student doing rote problem solving for their homework. If we meet once a week, then that time is for learning. As a corollary, if a student is on top of their school work we will work on to more advanced material. -I spend a lot of time working on the fundamentals. In math, the fundamentals are order of operations. Students usually have a vague sense of how how to proceed with operations, and often get confused by mild complexity. I always think it is worth it to take a detour on order of operations when a student shows confusion. In these instances, I illustrate the operation or theorem with a simple example. All theorems in math are sensical/non-arbitrary, and can be understood intuitively through simple examples. -I help students see the big picture. Students may understand what they have learned one day, but they often do not put in the effort to see how that material relates to concepts they learned a week or month ago. In practice, this may include making diagrams that categorize and connect concepts, or it may be me quizzing them.
